In a tiny, compact corner of the journalism lab, Grenadine makes their debut performance for a digital audience, bringing the music and bands of alternative rock to life.
Grenadine began their band in a small shed in one of their members’ backyards. Now, they are performing for the first time in their band’s musical career. Emma Shepard, the lead vocalist for Grenadine, says, “We were all kind of musically inclined and just thought that being in a band was cool.”
The band first met in 6th grade and decided to start a band shortly after. They each picked up their own respective instruments and began to make music together. Despite forming the band together, Grenadine’s members’ musical talent developed separately.
“I play drums. I’ve kind of always wanted to cause my dad played drums when he was younger.” Kylie McKean stated when asked about the origin of her role in the band. “I taught myself after just looking up tabs and YouTube videos.”
Emma had a similar experience with learning how to sing.
“I spent three years of my life at School of Rock with four different teachers, and they all taught me different things,” Emma explained. School of Rock, a musical education program, was the beginning of the vocalist’s endeavors, which eventually evolved into her role in Grenadine.
Grenadine does not plan on stopping after this performance. Even though the band has come far enough to complete their first performance, their ambitions are set on higher and greater achievements, furthering the band’s success.
For the near future, Grenadine aims to produce their own songs. “We’ve got a few songs that we’ve been working on that I think we’ve gotten pretty far with,” Kylie mentioned. “And [producing our songs] is in the near future.”
