Recently graduated senior Addison Herrick earned two scholarships from the University of South Dakota, where she plans on majoring in kinesiology and exercise science. Throughout high school, Herrick was involved in NHS, student council, volleyball, wrestling, humanitarian cord and softball.
“My parents really pushed me to be involved in high school and fill out scholarships,” Herrick said. “Mrs. Knipper [DMACC concurrent instructor and GATE advisor] also suggested I do a ton of DMACC courses which helped with scholarships because it looks really good on applications. Any questions I had, I asked her and she always supported me. The staff at USD has also been super helpful, the admissions counselor notifies me about scholarships that are open.”
The Governor’s Scholar Recognition Ceremony was held on April 27 and Herrick was recognized along with 424 seniors across Iowa. Along with this recognition, she also received a $500 valedictorian scholarship and a $12,000 “Coyotes Beginnings” scholarship from USD based on her ACT score, grade point average, and leadership roles.
“It feels nice because I won’t have to pay for as much college and it also feels good to be recognized for everything I’ve worked so hard for these past years,” Herrick said. “I spent a lot of time and effort in school and now I get to have some help with college and graduate school for my major.”
