January Teacher of the Month: Mrs. Longman

Molly Longman, who is one of two Teachers of the Month, was nominated by Ellie Burdock and Caitlyn McCollum, because she “cares about them as people, not just students.”

Longman has been a teacher for 10 years–all of those years at ADM.  She decided to become a teacher because she had a number of amazing teachers growing up who inspired her, and she likes the thought of teaching people skills that help them independently reach their goals.  She said that that the aforementioned goals didn’t have to be literature related either, she enjoys helping people succeed in any way she can, which isn’t surprising considering that among the classes she teaches is Applied Communications, a class designed to help students planning on going straight into the workforce after high school.

However, she decided to become an English teacher (although the possibility of becoming a Math teacher was a close second) “because I think writing and literature allow my students to express themselves a little more freely and creatively.”

When asked what being Teacher of the Month meant to her, Longman replied, “It is a reminder that even though students don’t always say it to my face, they are grateful for the work I put in. A lot of times the nominations that I get are from the students who are very quiet in class, and it kind of surprises me what little ways that they appreciate what I do… that’s very rewarding.”
