A high school show choir is coming next year. This has been in consideration ever since Mr. Novotney came to our school at the beginning of the current academic year. There are many people asking why we are getting a show choir.
Mr. Novotney said “Mrs. Roquet started a middle school show choir three years ago. She’s had great success with it and had about 50 or more kids in it every year since they started. So it’s just time to build off of it. I think it’s gonna be great for recruitment and retention for high school choir students.”
The beginning date is unknown for now, but we know when the choir will end and that is on March 2nd.
Mr. Novotney said “ It will start in November and end in the first week of March. In the first week of March.”
The theme of this is still being planned out. There is a lot of thought that goes into that sort of thing and Mr. Novotney is being very careful.
Mr. Novotney said “because it’s the first year we’re doing high school show choir, and it’s like the experience year. My goal is to make it as fun as possible, which is gonna make any theme or even just picking music harder, because I want to make sure I’m picking a solid set of songs.”
Another challenge with picking a theme is how many people are joining next year. This number is unknown to the people planning next year.
Mr. Novotney said “it also will be a challenge to program ’cause I don’t exactly know who’s gonna be in it. I anticipate probably around 30 to 40 students but I don’t know what the mix of those students will look like.”
Also because this is the first year that the high school will be trying a show choir we will not be participating in competitions. This doesn’t mean the show choir won’t perform though.
Mr. Novotney “next year we will be doing two home shows, we’ll do a parent show and then we’ll do an end of season show with jazz choir and show choir, and then between that we will do an exchange performance with another school. We won’t participate in a competition, but we will observe and watch a competition. I’d like to go to Waukee starstruck and watch their competition and even see if we could shadow a school. That would be really good experience for us.”
One student who is really excited about the new show choir is Andrew Nelson. Andrew was in the 8th grade show choir and was really excited when he found out there would be one next year.
Andrew said “it incorporates a lot of things that I like, like singing and dancing so yeah I’m excited to do it so much.”
