The Little Mermaid Performance

Imagine this. You’re six year old again and you’re seeing the ocean for the first time. Everything you’ve ever dreamed of is there. Mermaids, singing fish, and of course an evil octopus. Okay, you’re not really six years old again and at the ocean seeing all these magical creatures. So where are you?

Starting December 1-23 at the Des Moines Play House downtown Des Moines a live theatre show of the little mermaid will be taking place. If you’re wondering if it is exactly like the movie and you’ll be seeing the same old thing, you may want to reconsider that.

You will be seeing your favorite songs live including, “Under the Sea”, “Part of your World”, and “Kiss the Girl.” There are parts of the show that differ from the movie. The show includes a couple new songs you wouldn’t hear in the disney movie and scenes that play out differently.

Watching the dances and the songs on a screen compared to in a live theater show is incomparable. The set designs of the ocean moving up and down makes you feel like you really are there. A couple of the actors and actresses wore “heely shoes” which have wheels on the bottom of them slide along the floor. This made the show come even more to life and make the actors look like fish in the ocean.

Ariel was played by Savannah Trotter, an 18 year old senior at Waukee High School. Savannah’s voice and red hair matched perfectly for the character of Ariel and she did an outstanding job. Other crowd favorites were Blake Clyde, who played the character of the crab Sebastien. Johnny Kroll who played the character of Prince Eric was having trouble vocally on a few of the songs. He was struggling to hit the high notes and was a bit off pitch in his solos.

The audience at the show might have a hard time hearing everything the actors and actresses are saying. The microphones could of been a little louder at some points. Overall the majestic dances, songs, and characters made the show unforgettable. The show is perfect for all ages, young or old!
