ADM and Winterset Girls Fight Till the Last Second

Fighting for a win, Abby Hlas drives the ball in multiple times putting up double digits in points. With the score rounding out to be 57-54, ADM Tigers finally got the win they were looking for. They hope this win will take them on a “winning streak and build their confidence,” Bertman said. “Especially with regionals right around the corner!” They play the Perry Blue Jays in their next game and are looking for the effort they put in against Winterset.

On Tuesday January 24, the Tigers played the Winterset Huskies at home. ADM was 5-10 on the season, but were looking to overcome the last two losses and finally  come out on top. The last time the Tigers came face-to-face with the Huskies they were able to capitalize on their game play and ADM won 49-38. Winterset’s record this season was similar to ADM at 4-9. The biggest threats to the game would be Madison Wauters averaging 14 points a game and Macy Johnson with their teams highest three-point average at 36.4% and her forceful drive.

ADM started off strong in the first quarter with Sydney Bertman scoring ten points and both Allie Cook and Rachel Hardy rounding off the score with two more points each. The Tigers began to slip in the second quarter when the Huskies went on a run of 19 points and left ADM to only eight points. Johnson brought her best game, driving multiple times and even going coast to coast a couple of times.

With turnovers as a major problem, 11 in the first half, the Tigers decided to take it to the Huskies and step up their game. In the third quarter ADM was outscored once again 11-17, but their offense seemed to be picking up. ADM’s shots just were not falling.

The Tigers shut down the Huskies offense and made them scramble for the ball. Winterset took on more turnovers with the pressure of ADM’s defense. The girls began to play as a team with a lot of passion. Their passion definitely paid off!

As the transition to fourth quarter occurred, ADM was able to pick apart Winterset’s defense and began their comeback. Emma Jacobsen, Abby Hlas, and Cook were all making their threes, and both Bertman girls were working inside, and suddenly the team began to click together, finally working as a team. Their effort in the game began to soar above the Huskies. Within the last two minutes, the Huskies were making simple turnovers because of the extreme pressure the Tigers brought with their press. Cook was fouled with less than a minute left and the score 55-54. Cook made both free throws, stretching the Tiger lead to three points. With not much time left, the Tigers had to hold strong on defense, and they succeeded. ADM was able to add another win to their record and won 57-54.

Cook was a huge help to the Tigers shooting because she ended up with an 80% shooting average the entire game. ADM was also able to hold their turnovers to only three in the second half, which helped in controlling the ball and gaining a lead in the last minutes of the game. Hlas played with a lot of momentum and was able to put up 12 points against the Huskies. Hlas explained how the Tigers were able to have a come-back with a 15-point deficit: “I think we worked harder as a team! Without one person, we probably would not have been able to get the job done.”

Regarding the upcoming game against Perry, Hlas said, “It was a close game last time, so it’s going to take everything that we have in order to make it a win.”

ADM girls take on the Perry Blue Jays today at home, looking to take on another win.
