ADM senior Carter Nordman has landed a job at the Iowa State Capitol during the 2017 spring semester. Nordman is serving as a clerk under Ralph Watts who is a member of the Iowa House of Representatives. Watts, who recently won the election of Iowa’s 19th district, hired Nordman to work as his campaign manager throughout the election season. Now, the Senior is working by Watts’ side at the capitol to gain more valuable experience and knowledge on how Iowa’s legislature is run.

Nordman’s schedule for the internship includes arriving at the capitol at 8:00 every morning (except Fridays) for legislative session. During this time, Nordman sits in on the lawmaking of the many Iowan representatives. While at the capitol, he also helps work alongside Representative Watts. Nordman helps update Watts’ schedule, he prepares content for Watts’ sub-committee meetings and he contacts, interacts, and communicates with constituents regarding the well-being of Iowa District 19 (Dallas County).

In the future, Nordman is hoping to use this internship as a way of gaining experience and getting a better feel for the political atmosphere. Also, Nordman has goals of his own that include one day running for political office in Iowa.

“There is a possibility of me running for office in the future,” Nordman said.

Working at the capitol while in high school is a step in the right direction toward one day reaching that goal. After the conclusion of the internship in the spring, Nordman has decided he will be attending Grand View University in the fall. He plans on majoring in business marketing with a minor in political science or may decide to double major in both areas of study.
