College Football Madness
In a lot of people’s eyes, college football is considered the best sport in the world. Why is this? Because on any given Saturday, anything can happen. This last Saturday was one for the record books.
Three of the top four teams lost and five of the top ten teams lost. Number two, three and four all lost on the same day for the first time since 1985. Oddly enough, the Michigan Wolverines were ranked number two on both of these days.
In Jim Harbaugh’s second year as head coach for the Wolverines he turned the program 180 degrees to one of the top powerhouses in the country. The defense only allowed an average of 11 points against them.
Michigan traveled to Iowa City going up against the Hawkeyes. Iowa was having a disappointing season but going into the game needed one more win to become Bowl eligible. The Hawkeyes were huge underdogs going in but that didn’t matter, as Iowa played lights-out defense and put together a couple of nice drives and at the end of the game, they kicked a game winning field goal to win 14-13 and upset Michigan.
The last time Iowa beat a number two ranked team, it was Michigan, Jim Harbaugh was quarterback and the Hawks won on a game-winning field goal.
Number three ranked Clemson Tigers were going to battle against the Pittsburgh Panthers, who has been on both ends of upsets through the years. Playing at Death Valley, a popular nickname for Clemson’s stadium, against a very experienced Clemson team was nearly impossible for Pittsburgh, but that didn’t stop them from throwing up 43 points on the Tigers.
The game coming down to the very end, much like the Hawkeyes, the Panthers were down by two points with only time for one last chance. Chris Blewitt lined up getting his chance to kick 48-yard field goal.
Every kickers dream, but also every kickers nightmare, is the chance to upset a powerhouse team as time expires. Last Saturday, it just so happened to be a dream for Blewitt. The Panthers give the Tigers their first first loss of the season.
One of the most surprising teams of the season so far is the Washington Huskies, a team who came out of nowhere being undefeated going into last Saturday.
Washington was playing at home against a strong University of Southern California team. Washington was easily the favorite going into the game but the Trojans followed the pattern of the week upsetting the Huskies 26-13.
Jake Browning, the quarterback for the Huskies was a strong candidate for the Heisman Trophy, one of the most prestigious trophies you can earn in college football. After the loss his hopes for that trophy most likely go down the drain.
All three of these teams still have hopes for the College Football Playoff. It just makes it a lot harder all of them to get in.
Next Saturday there will be many more games and you never know, there could also be a lot of upsets again. College football is truly one of the most competitive sports. Tune in next week and maybe you can see one of the crazy endings happen live.
