The newly released Reminders of Him movie, released on March 13th, 2026, is currently rated 89% on the Rotten Tomatoes scale and has grossed 27 million dollars after its second weekend release.
The film is a romantic drama based on the novel Reminders of Him by Colleen Hoover. This is the third one of her novels to be turned into a film, 85% of viewers said it was their favorite of the three.
The story follows Kenna Rowan and her attempt to regain custody of her daughter Diem, after being incarcerated for a car accident that killed her boyfriend, Scotty, hoping to get her daughter back from Scotty’s hostile parents, who have fooled Diem into thinking that Kenna is unable to be a mother.
What is the pigeon? You may ask, it’s a reminder of him, Scotty, and his bright personality that follows Kenna throughout the film.
Differing from the film Regretting You, based on the Hoover novel, the film is filled with tragedy and deep-rooted themes of a mother’s love for her child. When I saw this film in theaters, I found myself shedding tears because of Kenna’s state. Portrayed beautifully by actor Maika Monroe, Monroe convinced me she was a single mother striving to meet her child, being vulnerable, and capturing the heart-wrenching moments.
Every element of the movie astoundingly added cinematic value to the piece, especially the soundtrack. With songs like “Funeral” by Phoebe Bridgers, “Yellow” by Morgan Harper-Jones and “The Night We Met” by Lord Huron & Allison Ponthier. The film features new and upcoming artists and also feel-good classics that add a sort of familiarity for all ages, additionally providing dimension and color to the events and scenes of the movie. Truly the perfect soundtrack.
With every book recreation into a film, there can always be something left to be desired, but perhaps because I was never able to get my hands on the book, I wasn’t thinking about what was lacking, but only on the edge of my seat to know what happens next. Personally, I find it better to read the book following the movie, that way you get the insight into the thoughts of the characters to add depth to the movie, not take away from it.
Junior Abby Asche, a Colleen Hoover reader, said, “I did notice that some elements of the book were not present in the film, but I feel they didn’t take away from the movie at all. Although some of the little things were lacking, I think that it was overall accurate and my favorite of the three movies.”
I have read both novels to Hoover’s other films and was overall satisfied with how they played out on screen. Both It Ends With Us and Reminders of Him included mature topics such as sexual abuse, loss, grief, and the effects of substance use. Overall, the films are educational and give a glimpse of a person victimized by these elements of life, navigating life’s course.
Reminders of Him is a must-watch film that will tug at your heartstrings and allow you to be grateful for the people in your life. Whether you have or have not read or seen Hoover’s other works, give it a watch and enjoy a beautiful film.
