Lactose intolerant, dairy-free, lactose free and so many more allergies or diets. We’ve all heard of them, but there has never been many accommodations until now.
As people walk through the grocery store aisles we see boxes upon boxes of different foods to accommodate different allergies and even isles dedicated to these allergy friendly foods. Some of us completely avoid these isles and don’t even give them a second thought.
Others, like me, find ourselves wandering the allergy friendly isles debating if this product will be good or if that one’s worth the money. Well I’m here to test those products and tell you what’s worth and what’s not.
I’ll be rating these products on 1-5 scale using paws rather than stars, points, etc. I chose a paws rating scale, because our mascot is the Tigers.
First up is the Whole Foods Vegan blueberry muffin found in their bakery. Not only is this treat dairy-free but also egg-free. Despite my fears of how this muffin would taste I was shocked by how delightful it tasted.
This muffin was more moist than a normal muffin, but still had a good texture. There wasn’t any crumbliness, the muffin stayed together, there was a strong blueberry flavor and the muffin still tasted very rich. Overall I would rate this 5/5 paws, no complaints from me.
Next the Good Planet olive oil cheese. I tried both the smoked gouda and sharp cheddar cheese cubes. When I first opened the package I had high hopes as the cubes looked and smelled like normal cheese. Unfortunately my hopes began to fall as I bit into one of the cubes.
After trying these cheese cubes I found that there was barely any flavor and the cubes were hard to chew with an unpleasant texture.
I decided to melt these cubes of cheese, to give them a second chance. I found that the flavor wasn’t as subtle and overall the cheese tasted better. But it was a little bit too sticky, overall I would give this 1 out of 5 paws. For me this isn’t worth the money as it didn’t meet my expectations and the taste was not great.
I also tried the Laughing Cow plant-based garlic and herb cheese. This tasted almost exactly like a normal Laughing Cow cheese. This cheese was very creamy and went well with crackers perfectly. There was a subtle garlic and herb flavor.
Overall I would rate this 5/5 paws for its great taste, amazing texture, and how similar it was to the original.
Next up was the Nuts for Cheese Un-Brie-Lievable cheese. This cheese had an amazing flavor that was super strong and powerful, yet it wasn’t too overpowering. The flavor was almost identical to real Brie cheese. This also spread very nicely on crackers.
Overall I would rate this one a 4 out of 5. The only part I didn’t love was how strong the flavor was, with a bit of a sour taste. Otherwise I would say this is very much worth it.
Next is another spreadable cheese. The dairy-free garlic and herb Boursin cheese. This cheese has great flavor and the texture isn’t bad. There’s a bit of a grainy feel when eating the cheese but it’s not very noticeable. I like the subtle garlic and herb flavor and how well it blends with crackers. Also the flavor hides the fact that it’s made out of soy, it’s not very noticeable.
Overall I give this a 4.5 out of 5 paws. I feel this is worth the money, but just wish it had a bit more flavor.
The next and final cheese I tested was the Cheese and Thank You dairy free fresh mozzarella. This may seem skeptical when you first hear fresh mozzarella that’s dairy free.
But it was very close to normal mozzarella not only in looks but also flavor. The texture was almost identical to normal mozzarella, but just a bit softer. There was a strong basil flavor, but it was light and not too overpowering.
I give this cheese a 4 out of 5 paws. I just personally am not a big fan of mozzarella. This one’s worth it.
Now onto another baked good. The Whole Foods vegan carrot cake cupcake is a great option and can be found in the Whole Foods bakery section. I didn’t find too much of a difference from a normal cupcake.
The main difference was there’s more moisture in the cupcake. But the texture was still the same, except for the cake sticking together more than a normal cupcake. The flavor was still delicious and the frosting was rich, creamy, and had a butter cream taste. This one gets a 5 out of 5 paws from me. Go treat yourself, because it’s definitely worth the money.
The final item of this review is the So Delicious dairy free strawberry cheesecake ice cream sandwiches! In my opinion these were phenomenal.
The sandwiches had a more refreshing flavor rather than creamy. There was also a subtle strawberry flavor. This was very similar to ice cream and still very sweet. I would give this 5 out of 5 paws! Definitely worth all of your money.
All of these products really shocked me. But in a good way, I assumed they wouldn’t be very good. I recommend giving most of these products a try if you’re wanting to try dairy-free or are dairy-free. These products should make your D-free lifestyle much easier.
