I got accepted into Mercy several months ago. I then decided to apply for the radiology tech program. It’s a very competitive program to get into, like most programs at Mercy. They only accepted 15 people in total and I was one of 2 high schoolers accepted, the others have been in college for at least a year before joining. Getting accepted was based off of previous GPA’s in high school and any other institutions people had previously gone to.
I was very nervous to start, I’m still nervous because I haven’t even had my first in-person class. I’ve been doing online classes and it’s a big jump going from high school to college classes. I have one online class, anatomy, and then the rest will be in person starting next week. I have four in person classes that week three days a week.
I always knew I wanted to be in the medical field when I grew up but I knew I didn’t necessarily want to be a doctor or nurse. Throughout my life I’ve had to undergo certain imaging and radiology procedures and loved being able to interact with those doctors of technicians, they were always very nice.
Since the first time I stepped on the Mercy campus I knew that’s where I wanted to end up for college. The faculty is super nice and I loved the campus. The program is two years long and I’m hoping to get into the field right after. I would love to go back to school eventually for another two year program to do radiology therapy. It would be very hard to work with patients who have sicknesses like cancer, but it would be a very rewarding job.
If you want to start your college journey early and apply to a Mercy program you definitely need to set yourself up in high school. These types of programs are very hard to get into because the medical field is a very competitive profession. Work on your grades and apply early. Try to get as many scholarships as possible as well because it’s not a cheap program to choose.
