Wednesday Addams is a prominent figure in popular culture, and her name gained even more recognition with the release of the Netflix series Wednesday which came out on November 23, 2022. A second season is set to be released in July 2025. Additionally, the book Wednesday: A Novelization of Season One, written by Tehlor Kay Mejia, offers a new perspective on Wednesday’s thoughts and feelings that were not depicted in the TV show.
Wednesday: A Novelization of Season One follows Wednesday Addams as she discovers her newfound psychic abilities, which her family (comprising her parents, Morticia and Gomez Addams, and her brother, Pugsley) is unaware of. After an incident involving a bully, a pool, and piranhas at her previous school, Wednesday finds herself enrolled at Nevermore Academy, a school for outcasts, freaks, and monsters. Interestingly, Nevermore is also the place where her parents met and is rumored to be the site of a murder.
As soon as Wednesday arrived at this school she tried to escape by any means possible, even sneaking out of mandatory therapy to recruit a normal boy (Tyler) to get her out of this place. Wednesday planned to stay at the cafe Tyler worked at until his shift was over, but this was delayed when a group of boys came and started terrorizing Wednesday, she quickly put them in their place. Following this incident the sheriff and soon after the principal entered. Before leaving to be reprimanded for escaping therapy the sheriff called Wednesday’s dad a murderer which left her curious about what he meant, as she didn’t think her dad could kill anyone.
Killings and murders aren’t just a part of the past, recently the forests around Nevermore have been the site of several “bear attacks” that have led many unsuspecting individuals to their early graves. Wednesday began her next escape plan during a mandatory school trip with Tyler, but their outing was quickly interrupted by the same group of boys from the café.
Tyler and Wednesday frantically ran away, and while fleeing, Wednesday encountered one of her classmates heading into the forest. She had a vision that he would be attacked and killed. Determined to save him, Wednesday chased after the boy.
He used his telekinetic abilities in the forest to pin her against a tree and showed her a drawing of herself, destined to an uncertain fate at Nevermore. Miraculously, Wednesday was saved from this attempted murder by what appeared to be a “bear,” which, in reality, was a monster.
