The Wicked movie came to theaters on November 22nd and has already been announced as the third biggest box office opening of the year. The film is rated PG and was rated 90% by Rotten Tomatoes.
Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo star as Glinda and Elphaba in the movie, with Jonathan Bailey as the Prince. The main themes presented in Wicked were friendship and trust with many underlying themes like prejudice and tolerance.
The film also shows themes of government corruption, and how what appears to be good or wicked can be reversed.
We are not huge fans of musicals but the songs in this movie were very good. Our favorites are “Popular ” and “Defying Gravity”. We liked Defying Gravity because the lyrics showed the sadness that both characters felt at the end but also the happiness they had. After all, Elphaba was choosing her path over the one that the world wanted for her. Overall, we enjoyed the songs that were more upbeat and energetic, which the film included a lot of.
Ariana as Glinda was a great choice by the producer because her character was funny and very unserious at certain points in the movie. She would add random comments that would get the whole theater laughing. At the same time, she gives really good advice during the tense moments in the movie.
One of the quotes from Glinda that stuck with me was “Are People Born Wicked, or Do They Have Wickedness Thrust Upon Them?” She says this towards the beginning of the movie and it seemed like Glinda was indirectly defending Elphaba because she still valued their friendship even though they were separated.
Glinda shows a lot of compassion in the movie by telling the Witch’s origin story and how she had a very rough childhood. We thought this was a great addition to her character because at times she seemed very self-centered and had a soft spot in her heart for the Witch. She originally came across as a selfish, shallow character, but she had a lot of character development and humor that added depth to her character.
Overall we would rate this movie as 6/10. It was very long and certain scenes were added that we didn’t think needed to be in it.
The music and character development were very good, however, we thought the plot was very confusing at times and hard to follow. The ending of the movie was very predictable which doesn’t affect our rating but is worth noting. We also found it odd that it said “to be continued” at the end because they didn’t leave it on a cliffhanger, and we think the series could have ended there.
Wicked Part 2 will be released to theaters on November 21st, 2025 almost exactly after the first part was released.
