Imagine meeting your pen-pal/best friend, the person who you can be completely and utterly yourself around, for the first time in person without even realizing it.

Punk 57 is a romance, friends to enemies to lovers novel written by Penelope Douglas. The novel follows the storyline of two young high school students, Ryen and Misha. Ryen and Misha have been best friends since the fifth grade. Although they only live 30 minutes away from each other, they have never met in person. Way back in fifth grade, Misha and Ryen were set up as pen-pals by their teachers, but when fifth grade ended, so did their letters. They vowed to never try and find each other, not in person or online, Misha and Ryen wanted to preserve the uniqueness of their situation and never contact each other unless it was through their letters.

As senior year dawned, Ryen began to worry about Misha. She hadn’t received any letters from him in months. She wasn’t sure what to do but the thoughts of Misha got pushed to the back of her mind when Mason transferred to her school. Ryen was the queen bee. She was a perky cheerleader who had the “hottest” football player interested in her, but Mason threatened to take that all away and make her the laughing stock she swore to never be again. As Mason tried to push Ryen off of her pedestal, Ryen fought harder to stay on top.

After that tragic night, Misha didn’t dare to write to Ryen. He missed her, but he was on a mission and she was only a distraction. He knew that he would run into her when he transferred schools. He almost looked forward to it, but Ryen could never know that he was Misha. To her and the rest of the school, he was Mason, the loner who picked on Ryen and stood up for those who were bullied by Ryen and her friends. He was so angry with Ryen. She was pretending to be someone she was not. Although he had sweet revenge to administer, he couldn’t help but try and out Ryen for who she truly was.
