As the end of the decade comes to a near, so does the experiences and interactions we have had with the internet’s finest entertainment: Memes. As technology and people grew, so did the entertainment and the quality of memes and what we found relatable and funny, back when the ´10s started classic memes such as Bad Luck, Brian, which Sarena Gibson said is the father of all memes, ruled the internet.

In 2017, we experienced two classic memes, The SpOnGe BOb MoCkiNg MeMe, and the distracted boyfriend meme. Both defined the year, being seen all over twitter, Instagram and other social media. In regards to the SpongeBob meme, Amethyst Heil said, ¨It is very easy to use to mock stupid statements and it is the best.¨ The distracted boyfriend meme came in as the second-best meme of the decade, with 29% of the student body who responded to the survey voting for it. ¨I see this more often than any of the other options and there are many captions that would work for it!¨ said Gweneth Schmidt.

In June of 2019, we were introduced to the Women Yelling at a Cat meme, which the students who were surveyed voted as the meme of the decade, with 32% of respondents voting for it. ¨Itś relatable to many situations which makes it relatable,¨ said Dominic Gardner.  Many other people enjoyed it because it had a cat, and it was funny to look at.

As 2019 slowly comes to an end, so do this year’s memes and memories. Even though we can not get back the countless hours we have spent scrolling on our phones, these memes popping up in our social media of choice in the next decade is sure to bring new, hilarious relatable memes. Just remember the old will not be forgotten, the laughs that we had will be forever engraved in our brains.
