Read Across America Day

The DeSoto Intermediate building celebrated Read Across America Day in honor of Dr. Seuss’s birthday March 2. Members of the Choral Reading Speech group, Spencer Evoy, Abby Jacobsen, Shade Hall, Abby Mullen, Callie Van Langen, Bryce Greer, Emily Pottebaum, Alayna Taylor, Kim Lockhart, visited the school, along with two members of individual speech, Hannah Borst and Aaron Norris.

The Choral Reading group presented their speech titled “Choose Your Own Adventure.” Students in third, fourth and fifth grade were great listeners and even called out what they thought the speech group should do. This included taking the river instead of the trail and climbing on the mound instead of wading through the tall grass.

Kyler Chapman, a student who had a front row spot to the performance, noted “It was very realistic!” Overall, he enjoyed the show.

After students listened to the performance, they were able to ask questions and learn about the members of the Speech team. Frequent questions and answers included:

“How long did you practice for?” Choral Reading practiced an hour every Monday and Thursday starting in November.

“How did you decide to perform this speech?” Seidl found the Choose Your Own Adventure book, then together the group chose what path they should take.

“What was your favorite part?” Although the answers varied, the most frequent answer was when they were attacked by a lion.

Overall, students at the DeSoto school enjoyed this experience and many decided they wanted to be in Speech when they are in high school.
