Movie Review: Moana
Moana, pronounced Mo-awe-nuh, is the Disney movie us fans didn’t know we wanted. It’s not based on a princess wearing a dress searching for her love. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. Moana, the teenage daughter of the head of her island, voiced by Auli’i Cravalho, is urged by the ocean to search for a man named Maui, voiced by Dwayne Johnson, who took a special stone that has the power to create life. With this stone being taken from its rightful place, the world has had misfortune for years. However, people of Moana’s home island, Motunui, are suddenly struck with a plight that ruins their coconut crop and causes the fish to disappear from the reef. This is when she sets out for find Muai.
Moana includes multiple singing scenes that will have the whole theater (or wherever you watch movies) wanting to sing along. The movie includes a constant battle between humans and the Earth, a very timely fight with the recent events of the global warming page being deleted from the White House website. Also included is a very feminist role, the main character that helps to save the world is a young, single woman.
Matthew Drake watched Moana and noted his favorite scene was when Moana’s Grandma is “Being crazy and singing and telling Moana to just go and do what she wants to do.” Drake would recommend it because it is just a cute movie and there is a lot to love within it.
Racquel Gonzalez stated her favorite scene was “When the little kids are being told the story and all the little boys are terrified but Moana is so interested and happy to listen. You can just tell from there her personality and how unique she is.”
Moana is packed with humorous moments, some only adults will understand, sad moments, and moments that truly fill the viewer with hope. It is a great story with great music and animation. View the full trailer here.
