Music Review: I Like It When You Sleep, for You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware of It
Some albums are known for their one-hit wonders. Some are known for their continual top tracks and “fire” singles. I’ve come to notice that newer albums- mainstream or alternate- tend to develop a storyline over the tracks until a continual ending.
This idea of a story-telling album comes to fruition in The 1975’s latest album, I Like It When You Sleep, for You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware of It. Seventeen tracks, ranging from 1:23 to over six minutes in length. Seventeen tracks, all connected to each other in a dreamscape of synths and electric guitar, woven together with lead singer Matty Healy’s love drunk vocals.
To go track by track would take far more space than this column would allow, but I figure some highlights of the best tracks (in my opinion) will be enough to convince you to buy this album and play it on repeat until the end of time.
“Love Me!” is the second track on the album and starts with a burst of electric guitar. Lead singer Healy sings of wanting a famous girl to lower her standards and love him. The techno-bubble of accompanying music makes it easy to dance to, and even easier to sing all day.
The 1975 also proves their ability to change things up with ballads in “A Change of Heart” and “This Must Be My Dream”. The starry-eyed lyrics and twinkles of guitar accompany lyrics of falling in and out of love with someone. (Coincidentally perfect for Valentine’s Day).
Love seems to be a common theme with this band, who combine catchy guitar riffs with tragically romantic lyrics. I Like It When You Sleep… adds instrumental tracks that flow into the storyline of the entire album.
The one track that caught me off guard was an acoustic song called “Nana”. The love in that track is more of a longing towards what I assume is Healy’s own grandmother who has passed. The song is more of a letter to her, telling of how Healy has been doing without her grandmotherly advice and presence.
Overall, I don’t think I could describe I Like It When You Sleep… in just a handful of adjectives. Space-y, in love, psychedelic, retro, vintage, whatever you call it, buy the album.
You won’t regret it.
