Trump vs. Streep – Students React
On Sunday January 8, highly acclaimed actress Meryl Streep was honored with Cecil B. DeMille Award at the Golden Globes. During her acceptance speech, she thanked the people who helped her receive the award and also used this time to criticize some of President-elect Donald Trump’s recent actions. Streep said, “There was one performance this year that stunned me. It sank its hooks in my heart. Not because it was good. There was nothing good about it.” Streep went on saying, “It was that moment when the person asking to sit in the most respected seat in our country imitated a disabled reporter. Someone he outranked in privilege, power and the capacity to fight back. It kind of broke my heart when I saw it. I still can’t get it out of my head because it wasn’t in a movie. It was real life.” Obviously referring to Trump, she was thinking back on the time in President-election where Trump supposedly was mocking a physically disabled reporter.
After the speech concluded it didn’t take long for Trump to fire back at Streep over social media. On Twitter, his account composed a tweet saying that Streep was, “one of the most over-rated actresses in Hollywood” and that she was a “Hillary flunky who lost big.”
Junior Ashley Tennant said, “I believe that Ms. Streep is able to have her own opinion on politics, but I also don’t think the Golden Globes was the time or place for it. It was unprofessional.”
Payton Conrad said, “Meryl Streep is right. Trump is very rude to a lot of reporters that interview him. As the future president, he should be more mature about getting asked questions.”
These two did not share the same opinion. Just like on social media, there are many people picking teams on both sides of the argument.
