As the Globe Turns…
The Golden Globe Awards were broadcast live on January 8, hosted by popular TV personality Jimmy Fallon. The awards recognize excellence in domestic and foreign television and film.
Although TV ratings have dipped in the past years, 2017’s Golden Globe ratings have remained steady and rank as the most-watched Globes telecast in ten years, according to a report by HollywoodReporter. But how meaningful are Hollywood awards to students at ADM?
Senior Logan Shield said, “Nothing’s as good as it was before. We have too many laws and restrictions. You can’t be creative, everything is just repeating itself.”
Award shows like the Golden Globes have come under fire in the past for being “white-washed;” a majority of the nominees and winners are of a Caucasian background. Written characters and scripts have also taken the heat for being unoriginal or cliché.
This year, the hit musical movie La La Land scored six Globe awards, beating out other films like Deadpool, Moana and War Dogs. This came as a disappointment for some who were hoping to take home more than a nomination.
Senior Marissa Meadowcroft said, “Star Wars [deserved a Golden Globe]. It was beautifully filmed and the story was really, like, bold and dramatic. And the CGI was awesome.”
Unfortunately for Meadowcroft, Rogue One will not be taking home a Golden Globe award this year or next; the cut-off date for screenings and nomination ballots was just before Rogue One premiered worldwide on December 16th. The hope for winning an award will be up to the Oscars.
