Movie Review: The Edge of 17
Nadine Byrd (Hailee Steinfeld) was considered a loner in social standards until she met her best friend, Krista (Haley Lu Richardson) in second grade. They bonded over a caterpillar, and their friendship was incredibly strong until their junior year of high school. Nadine deals with social anxiety and depression not only because of her younger days, but also because her father passed away three years before the movie takes place.
Nadine gets comfortable in her lifestyle with her best friend at her side until the most awful thing in girl code happens: Krista falls in love with Nadine’s older brother Darian (Blake Jenner) and switches her loyalty to the other, more liked sibling. Nadine reaches out for help and feels completely alone until she meets a dorky boy at school named Erwin (Hayden Szeto) who tries to make the stubborn, talkative girl realize that she not one of a million, but one in a million.
The music helps relate the story line to most millennials in today’s day and age that have felt like Nadine at some point in their life. An alternative blend of artists such as Phantogram, Grizzly Bear, Beck, Cage The Elephant and Birdy make their debut in a realistic take on adolescent life. Eccentric melodies and three songs that literally have ‘help’ or ‘save me’ written in the titles add to the pressure the audience feels for Nadine as she struggles to find her place.
I would highly recommend seeing this movie because it shows that you may never know what someone is going through unless you take the time to get to know them. The awkward character of Nadine makes you laugh, cry, and fall in love with the rollercoaster of the journey to find your place in the world.
