With 2024 coming to a close, people’s New Year’s resolutions are also coming to a close. A New Year’s Resolution is a yearly tradition in the world, where a person makes a promise to follow a belief, or action, for the whole year. As 2025 is coming up, I decided to send out a poll within our school, to see what other people at ADM think about New Year’s Resolutions.
The first question asked was “Do you partake in New Year’s Resolutions?” To which, 59.3% of 91 students and teachers stated that they didn’t partake in them.
Some responses varied from “I always have a resolution, but never actually follow through with it“, or “they feel pointless“. It’s different for pretty much everyone, not everyone is going to have the same opinion over them, for example, some stated that they “do mainly because it is a great way to reflect on the past year and make new goals for this year.”
The second question asked the students and teachers of ADM, if they have ever wanted to do any New Year’s Resolutions, and out of the 91 responses, 52.7% stated that they have wanted to do New Year’s Resolutions in the past.
Some people stated that “They can sometimes take off and be a large deal that changes people’s lives other times they don’t change anything” or “I have but they last 3 days before I forget about them completely”. Some also stated some positive ones, like “I think it would be good for me to set goals and try to meet them.”
The form also asked people if the New Year’s Resolutions even matter to people. A good majority of students and teachers believes that New Year’s doesn’t mean anything to them, which is understandable. We had some mixed responses when asking people why, but the one that really stuck out to us was, this quote. “Most people don’t stick to them and if you really want to change something about yourself it shouldn’t be because it’s a new year.” This shows that, even though it’s a new year, it doesn’t mean that you have to change because of it. You should be who you are, as well as who you want to be. Same goes for this next quote as well, “I listed no above because I think it important to implement them immediately, not wait for the new year to be the reason for change.”
The final question that was asked was asking about any traditions people follow. There were some mixed responses here as well, stating either “Eating 12 grapes under a table for good luck” or “Watching the ball drop each year“. However, some people celebrate differently. This person stated that “For some reason we usually make gingerbread houses. Probably because my mom gets them when they are on super sale because Christmas ended.” Difference in celebrations is wonderful, it’s what makes people enjoy the holidays. Being able to see multiple different point of views from people is truly wonderful.
