I am planning on attending Arizona State University next school year. I am attending Arizona State and plan to major in Journalism at the Cronkite School of Journalism. I know just two other people who are from ADM who are attending Arizona State as well. My roommate is from Texas, and I have never met her before.
One thing about Arizona State University that caught my eye was its study abroad programs. Some of these programs allow you to travel outside the country, but the one I am interested in allows me to travel to Los Angeles. There are other forms of this where you can go to Washington DC and study politics. However, the specific program I am partaking in will allow me to have more knowledge about my minor. For my minor, I plan to study fashion. I picked this because I really wasn’t interested in sports, and it will help me gain my dream job.
My dream job is to write for Vogue. Although the magazine is very prestigious, I think it is an attainable goal. Vogue is already sending me things about internships, and also they have a fashion campus located in Los Angeles. The ASU program will allow me to go to Los Angeles and study for a semester, so I will get experience with the fashion campus. This is so special to me because it is allowing me to come closer to my dream.
I am honestly more worried about leaving my friends behind. Arizona State University is a 21-hour drive away, and I will miss my friends here. Not many people I know are going to Arizona State, but I think I will be okay. I can make new friends, and I am looking forward to meeting my roommate.
My other option was Iowa, and my parents advocated for me to attend Arizona State University over Iowa. They were incredibly supportive of me and my decisions. I think they see this as an opportunity for them to move down to Arizona. My whole family loves Arizona, and I think they will move there after I graduate.
I looked at other colleges that were in-state, and really almost went to Iowa. However, I went through the winter and realized I could not walk to my classes when it was -20 degrees out.
Because I am coming from Iowa and the Midwest, I did have to make some drastic changes to my wardrobe. I am not packing any of my super heavy jackets, or hard winter gear. I did invest in some new swimsuits, shorts, and summer clothes. I think I will bring a few sweatshirts and a few sweatpants, but otherwise, my winter clothes are staying at home.
In my college search, I didn’t look into more places down south. I wanted to look at Oregon but decided that it was also cold. Overall I really am not nervous. I think that Arizona will be a great experience for me, and I am super excited to go. I love the weather and the school.
