Every year, new prom trends circle around with the latest being “Easter prom.” This new look has been quite a controversial topic for people with various opinions coming up. Some feel prom is all about being in full glam, and others view the “Easter prom” as a more affordable and practical option.
Traditionally, prom dresses are very expensive and some prices can even reach upwards of $1,000. This is a lot to spend for just one night on a dress. This price does not include all the other expenses that go into the night such as getting hair done, nails, makeup, heels, jewelry, and even dinner.
Some students feel that even though this new prom trend is set apart from previous years, it is the smarter way to go about the event. Many students are not minding these changing trends including junior Mackenzie Evans who shared her thoughts on the topic.
“It’s definitely a different prom aspect from what we’ve seen, but also I think people can wear whatever they want,” Evans said. “Instead of going to spend $400 to $1,000 on a prom dress, going to buy a simple dress that you will wear multiple times is so much better than buying a dress you will wear for one night.”
There are a lot of people who not only don’t want to spend a lot, but there are also numerous students who do not love the full glam look. Some girls are not comfortable wearing dresses with tons of sparkles or fancy additions, so a more simple sun dress is right up their alley. Prom is the night students should feel comfortable in the outfit they are wearing, and junior Taylor Braun supports this idea.
“People should wear to prom what they feel most beautiful in and I think prom is a really good way for students to have self-expression. It can really help students stand out and feel their best,” said Braun.
Some students are accepting of people wearing what they want to prom but personally wouldn’t choose to wear a Sunday dress to a formal dance. Many students are hesitant about this new trend but are not here to make people feel uncomfortable about choosing to wear a dress of their own choice. Addison Reynolds believes that she would not choose to take part in wearing a more casual dress to prom, but thinks if that it was a person wants to wear, they should wear it.
“I think they’re cute, they wouldn’t be my first option, but I think people can wear what they are comfortable in to prom,” said Reynolds.
There are some girls who feel they don’t look their best in the traditional prom look that consists of sparkles, feathers, or poofy dresses. Some girls feel more comfortable in a simple silk or floral dress because they feel like it compliments them more. Regardless of what someone wears on their body, prom is the night intended for people to have fun and bring people together. Prom night is not about bashing people for the dress they choose, and there are bigger problems in the world than worrying about what someone else wears.
“At the end of the day, a dress is a dress, wear what allows you to have the most fun on prom night,” said Reynolds.
Many people bring up conflict surrounding “Easter” dresses vs. the original dress for prom. Some could argue that Easter dresses are okay for prom, as students should be able to wear whatever they are most comfortable with. Others would argue that prom is the one night a year where girls can get in full glam and there is no such thing as “over-doing-it.” This being said, Easter dresses would defeat that purpose since they give more of a laid-back look.
After talking with some students around the school, some thought the same about the controversy. After asking if the Easter dresses took away from the look of prom, this is what Noelle McDonald had to say.
“Yes I think they take away from prom because it is supposed to be fun, big, sparkly, and you only get the chance to wear big, fun, sparkly dresses twice in high school,” said McDonald.
Many students take the opportunity of prom to get dressed up as much as they can, doing full makeup, hair, jewelry, heels, and dresses. With the full participation of other students at school, everyone should be looking their best at prom and feeling their best. Some may say that Easter dresses ruin the vibe of prom.
Leading from there, McDonald said, “I think they ruin the look of prom because they are too busy.”
This is a common opinion from other students around school as well. Girls get excited when they can dress up, so when others don’t want to take that to the fullest, it ruins the look for everyone else. After talking with another high school student, London Warmuth, this is what she feels about “Easter prom.
“I think you should wear a sparkly dress because it’s your only opportunity to wear a fancy sparkly dress. A spring dress ruins the main theme,” said Warmuth.
Warmuth’s, and Mcdonald’s thoughts both tie together by not wanting to ruin the theme and look of prom. Other students will argue that they should be able to wear whatever they want and are most comfortable in. This topic could go either way as this new trend is taking an uprise, but only time will tell if this could be the new “prom.”
