Dune Part 2, the long-awaited Sci-fi phenomenon, hit theaters on March 1 and quickly became a hot topic of conversation. The movie is inspired by the novel Dune, written by Frank Herbert in 1965. The franchise became a huge hit and continued to grow as the six other novels in the series were published. Fast forward to today, there are now 23 published books within the Dune world, and three Dune movies including Dune (1984), Dune Part 1 (2021) and Dune Part 2 (2024). To say the least, there were high expectations for Dune Part 2, and spoiler alert, it didn’t disappoint.
The movie overall is a beautiful piece of work. The sound design is what really stuck out to me. I thought it was awesome to watch huge ships and helicopters fly, whilst feeling the actual buzz of them within the theater. The sound of this movie is what grounded it. You feel as though you are actually in this world. From the sound of sand rustling in the wind to crazy explosions, the sounds of Dune Part 2 really immerse you in the watching experience, which is what is needed for a movie as long as this one, racking a total of 2 hours and 46 minutes.
The visuals are stunning as well. I felt as though you could pause this movie at any second, and the image could be a poster. It is a beautiful movie to watch, and I couldn’t take my eyes off the screen. The actors blend into the world perfectly; no character looks out of place. The costumes are breathtaking, and I cannot imagine how much time and effort went into each piece. The sets are huge and so realistic that I couldn’t tell what was CGI and what was really there. Overall, the movie is absolutely stunning and I was lost for words just as I tried to wrap my head around it.
Now as for the story, I felt that it was way more compelling and easier to comprehend compared to part 1. Of course, this is a Sci-fi movie, and Dune is extremely complicated in its story and the actual world that is Dune. But Part 2 overall was not as confusing as I thought it was going to be. I was able to follow along just fine with what was going on, and I understood what had happened by the end of the movie, which I cannot say was the case for me when I left part 1. Of course, I would recommend watching Dune more than once as you will continue to pick up pieces of the story with the more watches you have. I do feel like that makes this a great movie. Being able to go back and watch movies over and over again and still take away something new is a skill that not many directors are able to produce anymore.
I loved Dune Part 2. I think this is a great piece of cinema that over time will become a master class in film. The story itself may not be for everyone as it dives pretty deep into the cliche of its genre, but you cannot deny the fact that it nails everything on the head. With cinematography, costume design, sound design, dialogue, screenplay, set design, CGI, and everything else that goes into creating a great movie, Dune Part 2 mastered it and absolutely blew any competition out of the water.
