‘Go Ask Alice,’ by Anonymous
Teenagers live in a fast-paced world laced with the influences of destructive habits, one of these being drugs. In ‘Go Ask Alice,’ an anonymously submitted collection of diary entries, the reader is let into an intimate account of events. The entries begin when the main character, whom remains unnamed, has just had her fifteenth birthday. She has a regular life in a regular town with a regular family. What makes this book irregular is it’s rawness. ‘Go Ask Alice’ is an uncensored, rough, and brutally honest account of the world of drugs and addiction. The author of the diary entries, we’ll call her ‘Alice’, uses her diary as a confidant for most of her experiences and feelings during her complicated teen years. This book is a dramatic and eye-opening representation of what it was like to be a struggling teenager in the 70’s. The spookiest part is how our current society still resembles the one Alice lived in forty years prior. ‘Go Ask Alice’ is a great read, and I suggest all who are interested in reality check it out.
