President Trump has been impeached. Now what?

President Trump showed his decry for the impeachment voting by tweeting, ¨SUCH ATROCIOUS LIES BY THE RADICAL LEFT, DO NOTHING DEMOCRATS. THIS IS AN ASSAULT ON AMERICA, AND AN ASSAULT ON THE REPUBLICAN PARTY.¨

December 18, 2019, will forever be remembered as the historic day that President Trump was impeached by the House of Representatives. This is the third time in our nation’s history that a president has been impeached. But what exactly is impeachment?

Let’s break it down.

According to the Merriam Webster Dictionary, impeachment is defined as a charge of misconduct against someone in public office. Trump has been charged with misconduct, abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. In January 2020, the Senate will hold a trial to determine whether or not he should be removed from office and prohibited from holding public office in the future.

In regards to the impeachment inquiry, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi said, ¨If we do not act now, we would be derelict in our duty. It´s tragic the president´s reckless actions make impeachment necessary. He gave us no choice. ¨

It was a long and winding road to Trump’s impeachment. The process started on September 29, 2019, when Pelosi announced the formal investigation into Trump´s relationship with Ukraine. The next few months were filled with committee hearings and House debates, until December 18 when the House voted on the two charges. The first charge, abuse of power, passed with a vote of 230-197. The second article of impeachment, obstruction of Congress, passed with a vote of 229-198.

As we wait for the Senate to finish the impeachment process, the unknown surrounds us. Questions fill our minds: How will this affect the 2020 election? Will the impeachment process effect those in the House who voted who are up for reelection in 2020? If Trump is not removed, how will his supporters react? Will he have a large turnout for the 2020 election, beating the Democratic candidate?

If Trump is removed, we will have President Pence. How will this change our country? Who would become vice president, and how would this affect our country’s future? Would President Pence be able to win reelection in the upcoming year?

No matter what happens, we are living in a very politically interesting time. As the Senate trial approaches, all we can do is wait for the future to fall into place.

And we wait.
